1. Before You Register: What You Need to Know

Registering for the GMAT in 2026 is straightforward — but only if you know exactly what to expect before you land on the booking page. Too many Indian test-takers register in a hurry, pick the wrong mode or date, and end up paying reschedule fees that eat into their prep budget. This guide exists so that does not happen to you.

A few ground-level facts first:

The GMAT is now exclusively offered as the GMAT Focus Edition. The legacy GMAT exam is no longer available anywhere in the world. If you encounter any prep material or registration advice referencing the old 3.5-hour format with an Analytical Writing Assessment, disregard it — that exam does not exist for 2026 test-takers.

The GMAT Focus Edition runs 2 hours 15 minutes with an optional 10-minute break. It has three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. Each section is scored individually on a 60–90 scale, and the total score runs from 205 to 805.

You need a mba.com account to register. If you do not already have one, create it at mba.com before doing anything else — the entire registration, score reporting, and rescheduling process runs through this portal.

📋 What You Need Ready Before Registering A valid passport (required as ID for both test center and online exam), your mba.com login credentials, a credit or debit card for payment, your preferred exam date range, and — if choosing a test center — your nearest city shortlisted from the list in Section 4.

2. GMAT 2026 Fee Breakdown for India

Understanding the full cost picture before you register prevents surprises. The base registration fee is only part of what you may end up spending.

Base Registration Fees

ModeFee (INR)Fee (USD)
Test Center Exam₹23,200$275
Online Exam (at home)₹25,400$300

The online exam costs more than the test center option — a counterintuitive fact that surprises many test-takers. The premium reflects the proctoring infrastructure required for remote delivery.

⚠️ Currency Note Fees are set in USD by GMAC and converted at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of payment. The INR amounts above reflect approximate 2026 rates. Your final INR charge may vary slightly depending on your bank's exchange rate and any applicable foreign currency transaction fees. Always check the mba.com checkout page for the current converted amount before confirming.

Additional Costs to Budget For

ItemFee (INR)Fee (USD)
Additional Score Report (per school)₹2,920$35
Reschedule (more than 60 days out)₹4,560$54
Reschedule (15–60 days out)₹9,080$107
Reschedule (1–14 days out)₹13,740$163
Cancellation (more than 60 days out)Partial refund~$104
Cancellation (15–60 days out)Partial refund~$82
Cancellation (1–14 days out)No refund$0
Enhanced Score Report₹2,920$35

Your registration includes five free score reports sent on exam day. After that, each additional report costs ₹2,920 per school. If you are applying to more than five programs, factor this into your total budget from the start.

Total Cost Estimate for a Typical Indian Applicant

A test-taker who registers for a test center exam, applies to seven schools, and needs one reschedule (more than 60 days out) is looking at approximately:

₹23,200 + ₹5,840 (2 extra reports) + ₹4,560 (reschedule) = ₹33,600

Planning for this number upfront is far better than discovering it piecemeal.

3. Test Center vs. Online Exam: Full Comparison

The choice between sitting the GMAT at a test center or from home is one of the most consequential decisions in your registration process. Neither option is universally better — the right choice depends on your home environment, comfort with technology, and personal test-taking psychology.

Who Should Choose the Test Center

Choose a test center if you live in or near one of the major cities listed in Section 4, if you are easily distracted at home, if you are not fully comfortable managing technical setups under pressure, or if the physical noteboards feel more natural to you than an on-screen whiteboard for quantitative work.

Who Should Choose the Online Exam

Choose the online exam if the nearest test center requires significant travel, if you have a reliable internet connection and a quiet, private room at home, if weekend or early-morning slots suit your schedule better, or if you have taken online proctored exams before without issue.

⚠️ Online Exam Technical Requirements GMAC's online exam requires a Windows or Mac computer (no Chromebooks, tablets, or phones), a working webcam and microphone, a stable internet connection of at least 1 Mbps, and a room where you are alone for the entire exam duration. Test your setup using the Pearson VUE system check tool before exam day — technical failures on the day of the exam do not automatically qualify you for a free retake.

4. GMAT Test Centers in India

India has approximately 40 Pearson VUE test centers spread across the country, concentrated in major metros but present in several Tier-2 cities as well.

Major Cities with Test Centers

Mumbai Multiple centers across the metro, including locations in Andheri, Thane, and the western suburbs. Generally well-stocked with available slots but books up quickly during peak application season (September–December).

Delhi / NCR Centers in Delhi, Gurgaon, and Noida. The NCR region has some of the highest test volumes in India — book at least 6–8 weeks in advance for your preferred date.

Bangalore Multiple centers across the city. Popular with the city's large professional and tech community. Slots in October and November fill up particularly fast.

Hyderabad Several centers available. Good availability outside of peak season. Convenient for test-takers across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Chennai Centers serving Tamil Nadu and parts of South India. Moderate slot availability with better options on weekday mornings.

Kolkata Primary center for Eastern India. Fewer centers than western metros — earlier booking is advisable.

Pune Convenient option for Maharashtra test-takers who prefer to avoid Mumbai traffic. Good weekday availability.

Other Cities with Centers

Test centers are also available in Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow, Nagpur, Surat, Vadodara, Visakhapatnam, and several other cities. The complete, up-to-date list is available through the Pearson VUE test center locator on mba.com.

📍 How to Find Your Nearest Center Log into mba.com → Begin registration → Select "Test Center" → Enter your city or PIN code → The system will show available centers and real-time slot availability within your chosen date range.

5. Step-by-Step Registration Guide

Step 1: Create or Log Into Your mba.com Account

Go to mba.com and create a free account if you do not already have one. Use an email address you check regularly — all GMAC communications, score reports, and appointment confirmations go here.

Step 2: Complete Your Profile

Fill in your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport. Name mismatches between your mba.com profile and your ID on exam day can result in you being turned away from the test center — this is non-negotiable.

Step 3: Navigate to the GMAT Registration Page

From your dashboard, select "Register for the GMAT Focus Edition." Do not search for the legacy GMAT exam — it is no longer offered and will not appear for 2026 dates.

Step 4: Choose Your Exam Mode

Select either Test Center or Online (at-home) exam based on the comparison in Section 3. You cannot switch modes after registration without paying a reschedule fee and going through the rebooking process.

Step 5: Select Your Date, Time, and Location

For test center: enter your city and browse available slots. For online: browse available time slots — these run 24/7 and refresh frequently.

Pick a date that gives you at least 4–6 weeks of remaining prep time after your current readiness level. Do not register for a date you are not confident about — rescheduling costs money.

Step 6: Review and Pay

Review all details carefully before payment. Confirm your name, date, mode, and test center (if applicable). Pay via credit card, debit card, or net banking. You will receive an immediate email confirmation.

Step 7: Save Your Confirmation

Download and save your appointment confirmation. For test center exams, bring a printed or digital copy along with your passport on exam day.

6. Rescheduling, Cancellation & Refund Policy

Life happens. GMAC does allow rescheduling and cancellation, but the fee structure is designed to reward early decisions.

Rescheduling

TimingFee (INR)Fee (USD)
More than 60 days before exam₹4,560$54
15–60 days before exam₹9,080$107
1–14 days before exam₹13,740$163

Rescheduling within 24 hours of your appointment is generally not permitted. If you need to make a last-minute change, contact GMAC support directly.

Cancellation and Refunds

If you cancel your exam, you receive a partial refund only if you cancel more than 14 days before your appointment. Cancellations within 14 days receive no refund. The refund amounts (in USD) are approximately:

  • More than 60 days out: ~$104 refund (out of $275/$300 paid)
  • 15–60 days out: ~$82 refund
  • Less than 14 days: $0 refund

💡 Practical Advice If your plan changes and you cannot sit the exam, rescheduling is almost always financially better than cancelling — especially if you plan to take the GMAT eventually. Rescheduling preserves your registration and a portion of your payment.

7. Score Reports & Additional Costs

Free Reports on Exam Day

Your registration includes five free score reports that you designate before or on the day of your exam. These are sent immediately after you see your unofficial score. Choose your five schools carefully — once designated and submitted, these cannot be changed.

Additional Score Reports

Each report beyond the initial five costs ₹2,920 ($35) per school. If you are applying to more than five programs — which many competitive applicants are — calculate this cost in advance and budget accordingly.

Enhanced Score Report

For ₹2,920 ($35), you can purchase an Enhanced Score Report (ESR) that provides a more detailed breakdown of your performance by question type and difficulty level. This is most useful if you plan to retake the exam and want to identify specific weak areas systematically.

Score Validity

GMAT scores are valid for five years from the date of the exam. This means a score from a 2026 exam remains valid for applications through 2031.

8. Booking Tips to Save Time and Money

Book early — especially for peak season. The September to December window is the busiest period for GMAT registrations in India, driven by Round 1 and Round 2 MBA application deadlines. Test center slots in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore fill up 6–10 weeks in advance during this period. If your target round has a November or December deadline, book your exam by September at the latest.

Register only when your prep is on track. The single most expensive mistake Indian test-takers make is registering for a date they are not ready for and then paying reschedule fees. If you are more than 3–4 weeks away from your target score in practice tests, wait until you are closer before booking a date.

Use weekday morning slots for better availability. Saturday afternoon slots at major test centers disappear first. Weekday morning slots — 9 AM to 11 AM on Tuesdays through Thursdays — typically have better availability and can be booked with shorter lead times.

Compare INR costs at checkout. Because fees are charged in USD, your final INR amount depends on your bank's exchange rate. If you have a zero-forex-fee card, use it for your GMAT registration to avoid paying an additional 1–3% currency conversion markup.

Check the cancellation policy before your exam date approaches. Set a calendar reminder 61 days before your exam. If your preparation is significantly off track at that point, you still have the option to reschedule at the lowest fee tier. Waiting until two weeks out costs nearly three times as much.

Do not wait for "the perfect date." Many test-takers spend weeks hunting for an ideal slot and end up with fewer options as availability narrows. If a slot works logistically and your prep is solid, book it. You can always move it once if needed — just keep the 60-day rule in mind.

9. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take the GMAT online from anywhere in India? Yes. The online exam is available to test-takers across India, including smaller cities and towns where no test center exists. The key requirement is a stable internet connection and a private, quiet room.

How many times can I take the GMAT? You can take the GMAT Focus Edition up to 5 times in a rolling 12-month period and 8 times total in your lifetime.

Can I use my Aadhaar card instead of a passport? No. A valid passport is the only accepted ID for the GMAT exam in India, for both test center and online formats. Aadhaar, PAN card, and driving license are not accepted.

Do I need to choose my section order at registration? No. Section order is chosen on exam day, immediately before the exam begins. You will be given three options for the order in which to attempt the three sections.

What happens if I miss my exam appointment? A no-show is treated as a same-day cancellation. You receive no refund and the registration is forfeited. Contact GMAC support immediately if an emergency prevents you from attending — in exceptional cases, they may offer a reschedule, but this is not guaranteed.

Can I retake the GMAT if I am unhappy with my score? Yes, with a mandatory 16-day waiting period between attempts. You can cancel your score immediately after the exam if you choose not to accept it — cancellation on exam day means schools will not see that attempt.

Is the GMAT Focus Edition accepted by all Indian MBA programs? The GMAT Focus Edition is accepted by all programs that previously accepted the legacy GMAT. However, a small number of Indian domestic MBA programs may have specific requirements — verify directly with each program you are targeting.
