1. AWA Section Overview

As of September 2024, the Argument task has been removed. For GRE 2026, candidates now write only one essay: the Issue Task.

The section evaluates critical thinking, logical reasoning, clarity, organization, and written English proficiency.


2. Understanding the Issue Task

The Issue Essay presents a general statement about society, education, technology, leadership, ethics, or policy. You must:

  • Take a clear position
  • Support it with logical reasoning
  • Provide relevant examples
  • Address counterarguments

There is no correct opinion. Scoring depends on argument quality and clarity.
